Spinal cord injuries are becoming more common than ever, with health experts warning of a sharp rise in cases due to modern sedentary lifestyles and poor posture habits. As the world observes Spinal Cord Injury Day on September 5, experts emphasize the critical role awareness plays in preventing and managing spinal issues.

“With increasing screen time, longer desk hours, and improper posture during the use of mobile devices and computers, spinal issues are on the rise, affecting both the young and the old,” said Dr. Arvind Kulkarni, Head Spinal Surgeon at the Mumbai Spine Scoliosis and Disc Replacement Centre. “What was once predominantly an issue among older adults is now being seen in younger populations.”

The prevalence of spinal cord injuries in India is particularly concerning, with approximately 2,500 new cases emerging annually, according to estimates. The problem is no longer restricted to age-related degeneration but has extended to younger individuals, often linked to poor posture and excessive use of technology.

“Spinal issues, such as chronic back pain and neck problems, are becoming increasingly common among younger people,” explained Dr. Kulkarni. He highlighted the growing phenomenon of “tech neck,” a condition resulting from sustained poor posture while using mobile devices. “There is an urgent need for early education and intervention on proper spinal care to curb these trends.”

Alongside these growing concerns, advancements in spinal surgery offer new hope for patients. Minimally invasive techniques are gaining popularity due to shorter recovery periods, reduced risks, and less post-operative discomfort. These developments have made treatment more accessible, although affordability remains a significant challenge for many in India.

“While there are promising treatments for spinal cord injury management, such as spinal cord stimulators and diaphragmatic stimulation, the cost of these innovations is a barrier for many patients,” said Dr. Bibhudendu Mohapatra, Associate Director of Spine Services at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in New Delhi. “We hope to see a future where these advanced technologies become affordable so that more patients can benefit from them.”

Experts emphasize that prevention is key when it comes to spinal health. They recommend maintaining good posture, engaging in regular exercise, managing a healthy weight, and staying hydrated. These simple lifestyle adjustments, combined with proper education on spinal care, can significantly reduce the risk of injury.

As the world marks Spinal Cord Injury Day, there is a collective call for increased awareness and proactive care to prevent these life-altering injuries from becoming even more widespread.
