Himachal Pradesh is set to enhance its food safety measures with the approval of a new food forensic unit, marking a significant advancement in the state’s efforts to ensure the quality and safety of food products. This facility will be the second of its kind in India, following the successful establishment of the first food forensic unit in Gujarat.

The new unit aims to simplify the process of checking for adulteration in food items and identifying the causes of food-borne illnesses. It will be a pivotal resource in the state’s ongoing battle against food contamination and will play a crucial role in protecting public health.

“Quality food products are essential, and this forensic unit will help monitor sugar content, pesticides, and insecticides,” said Meenakshi Mahajan, Director of State Forensic Services. The unit’s capabilities will allow for comprehensive testing of various food items, ensuring they meet safety standards before reaching consumers.

The exact location of the new lab is yet to be finalized, with options including the state forensic science laboratory in Junga or regional labs in Mandi or Dharamshala. Regardless of its location, the lab will be equipped to test samples from the public distribution system and industrial sources, offering a wide range of testing services to ensure the integrity of food products.

This initiative is part of a broader effort led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to strengthen forensic services across Himachal Pradesh. By establishing this food forensic unit, the state government is taking a proactive step to safeguard its residents against the dangers of food adulteration and contamination.

The new facility is expected to significantly improve the state’s ability to detect harmful substances in food, thereby preventing potential health risks before they can impact the population. With this move, Himachal Pradesh is setting a new standard for food safety in India, paving the way for other states to follow suit.
