Lucknow, India – A new plant-based synergistic natural supplement, ‘NBRI-Gout Out,’ promises to revolutionize the management of gout, particularly in elderly individuals, by improving their quality of life. Developed by the CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) in Lucknow, this innovative herbal remedy addresses the debilitating symptoms of gout, including pain, joint stiffness, and redness, offering a potential lifeline to those affected by the condition.

Gout, a type of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid in the blood, affects a significant portion of India’s population, particularly those above the age of 35. The condition often leads to excruciating pain and limited mobility, severely impacting the lifestyle of elderly individuals. While various herbal products claim to alleviate these symptoms, many lack scientific validation and are based solely on traditional knowledge. Moreover, existing products often contain a large number of ingredients, complicating their use and efficacy.

The CSIR-NBRI’s ‘NBRI-Gout Out’ offers a scientifically validated alternative. The supplement, developed as part of a project funded under the “Scheme for Young Scientist and Technologist” by the Department of Science and Technology, is a result of extensive research led by Dr. Ankita Misra, the Principal Investigator, under the mentorship of Dr. Sharad Srivastava, Chief Scientist & Head of the Pharmacognosy Division at CSIR-NBRI.

The herbal formulation comprises a combination of five medicinal plants, selected for their synergistic efficacy in treating gout and gouty arthritis. Laboratory studies, including in-vitro and in-vivo assays, demonstrated that ‘NBRI-Gout Out’ is on par with the standard gout treatment drug colchicine. Notably, the supplement was found to reduce uric acid levels by 80% and inflammatory mediators such as IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β by 70%, which are key contributors to the pathogenesis of gout. Additionally, the remedy significantly alleviated pain, reduced joint stiffness, and improved locomotion in test subjects.

Crucially, the safety and toxicity of ‘NBRI-Gout Out’ have been thoroughly tested in animal models, ensuring its viability as a safe treatment option. The formulation is completely water-soluble, contains no solvent residue, and is made from raw materials readily available in the herbal drug market, posing no threat to biodiversity.

The development of ‘NBRI-Gout Out’ in alignment with AYUSH principles makes it a cost-effective solution, accessible to a broad segment of the population. The remedy is also positioned as a valuable adjuvant therapy, complementing existing treatments for gouty arthritis, gout flare-ups, prophylaxis, and idiopathic cases with gouty symptoms.

The breakthrough has already attracted interest from two companies for commercialization, indicating a promising future for this herbal remedy in the market. As India’s elderly population continues to grow, ‘NBRI-Gout Out’ represents a significant step forward in improving the health and well-being of those suffering from gout, offering relief and restoring mobility to those most in need.

With its potential to address a widespread health issue, ‘NBRI-Gout Out’ underscores the importance of scientific research and innovation in the development of effective, natural therapies for chronic conditions like gout.
