Exercise is undeniably crucial for both physical and mental health, but experts emphasize that moderation is the key to preventing injuries, avoiding burnout, and maintaining consistency. This balanced approach ensures long-term health benefits and sustainable fitness habits.

Regular physical activity has been proven to prevent major conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers. Additionally, exercise has significant positive effects on mental health, alleviating stress, anxiety, and depression.

“Moderation in regular exercise is important because it helps prevent injuries, reduces burnout, and promotes sustainable habits,” said Dr. Samanjoy Mukherjee, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Cardiac Science, Manipal Hospital, Dwarka. “Balancing intensity and rest allows your body to recover and adapt, leading to improved overall fitness and well-being. It also helps maintain motivation and enjoyment, reducing the risk of overtraining and related health issues,” he added.

In recent years, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been several tragic incidents where individuals in their mid-30s and 40s, including well-known personalities like stand-up comedian Raju Srivastav, TV actor Siddharth Shukla, and Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar, have suffered heart attacks during or after their workout sessions. These events have raised concerns about the risks associated with high-intensity training without proper precautions.

“Most of the catastrophes related to exercise are due to high-intensity training, often linked to arrhythmias or myocardial infarction. The maximum permissible heart rate at peak exercise is 220 minus your age,” explained Dr. Mukherjee. “One should be careful not to exceed this limit. Very few people receive proper medical screening before engaging in high-intensity workouts. Moderation helps prevent these untoward injuries as well.”

Excessive exercise can lead to elevated stress hormones and an increased risk of heart problems. Hence, adequate rest between workouts is crucial for allowing the heart to repair and strengthen, thereby reducing injury risk and ensuring continuous improvement.

“Undoubtedly, regular exercise is beneficial for your health, but moderation is essential. Each individual has a unique limit, so avoid comparing your workout volume with others,” advised Dr. V Mohan, chairman of Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, in a post on the social media platform X.com. He highlighted that signs of overexertion include excessive fatigue, breathlessness, and feeling unwell.

“It is crucial to exercise daily while also allowing adequate time for recovery. This balanced approach will help you achieve optimal health and well-being without overstraining your body,” Dr. Mohan concluded.

In summary, while exercise is a vital component of a healthy lifestyle, practicing it in moderation is essential to prevent adverse health effects and ensure long-term benefits.
