In a remarkable act of service and dedication, Tellam Venkatarao, a Congress MLA from Telangana and a qualified surgeon, performed two emergency caesarean sections on pregnant women in the flood-ravaged Bhadradri Kothagudem District. The surgeries took place at the government-run hospital in Bhadrachalam on Tuesday, showcasing the MLA’s commitment to his community amidst natural calamity.
Venkatarao, representing the Bhadrachalam (ST) constituency, was approached by hospital authorities when two women went into labor, and no doctors were available to attend to them due to the ongoing flood crisis. The heavy rains and subsequent flooding had paralyzed the region, particularly impacting the Bhadrachalam area along the Godavari River. The severe weather conditions made it impossible to transfer the women to other medical facilities, prompting the hospital staff to seek help from Venkatarao.
With normal life disrupted, road links severed, and emergency services strained, the situation was dire. Anticipating complications from the flood situation, the two pregnant women had been preemptively moved to the Bhadrachalam hospital from their respective villages. However, as they went into labor on Tuesday, the hospital faced a critical shortage of surgeons. Four of the five surgeons had been transferred, and the fifth was unavailable, leaving the hospital in a precarious position.
Despite being occupied with flood relief efforts in his constituency, Venkatarao, a trained civil surgeon, promptly responded to the call for help. He rushed to the hospital and successfully conducted the caesarean sections, delivering a healthy baby boy for Bhimanaboina Swapna and a baby girl for Pilli Pushpaleela. Both mothers and their families expressed profound gratitude for the MLA’s timely intervention and expertise.
Venkatarao reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of the agency areas, emphasizing his readiness to step in during emergencies. His actions earned praise from Telangana’s Health Minister, Damodar Raja Narasimha, who thanked the MLA for his exemplary service.
Venkatarao, who holds a Master of Surgery (MS) degree obtained in 2011, had previously worked at Bhadrachalam hospital for several years. His transition from a medical professional to a legislator has not diminished his dedication to healthcare. He was elected to the Assembly on a BRS ticket in November 2023 but switched allegiance to the ruling Congress party in April 2024. Despite the political shift, his primary focus remains the welfare of his constituents.
This incident highlights the intersection of public service and healthcare, where leaders like Venkatarao play a crucial role in addressing the immediate needs of their communities, even in the face of natural disasters.
