Rayagada, Odisha – June 15, 2024 – In response to a confirmed death due to diphtheria and a series of suspected diphtheria-related fatalities in Rayagada district, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the Health Department and Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) to investigate the causes and implement measures to control the outbreak.

The directive came following confirmation from RMRC of a diphtheria death in Manuspadar village, Kashipur block. This death marks the fifth in a series of fatalities suspected to be caused by the bacterial infection within the last month. The affected village, located in a remote and challenging area, has seen the outbreak since late May.

“A prophylactic dose of antibiotics has been administered to all susceptible individuals in the community, and symptomatic patients are responding well to treatment. The situation is currently under control,” stated the Chief Minister’s office. The CM has also instructed the Panchayati Raj Department to expedite the provision of drinking water supply and the construction of a motorable road to Manuspadar.

Official reports indicate that the five deaths in Manuspadar occurred over a one-month period. The isolated nature of the village has complicated efforts to address the outbreak swiftly. Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Rayagada, Dr. Lalmohan Routray, confirmed that blood samples from the affected individuals have been sent to Bhubaneswar for testing to conclusively identify the disease.

A health department team has conducted door-to-door screenings and treatments in Manuspadar, with daily visits and close monitoring of the situation. The first four deaths, which were not reported to health facilities and were cremated at the community level, are suspected diphtheria cases.

Diphtheria, a serious bacterial infection that affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, can lead to severe complications and death if not treated promptly. The Health Department’s swift response and ongoing efforts aim to prevent further spread of the disease and ensure the health and safety of the affected community.

As the investigation continues, authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and timely reporting of symptoms to health facilities to manage and contain the outbreak effectively.
