As the world commemorated World Liver Day on Friday, medical experts cautioned against the growing trend of liver detox practices, emphasizing that the liver is inherently equipped to filter toxins without the need for specialized detox treatments.

In recent years, liver detox regimens have gained popularity, with influencers and celebrities endorsing various natural remedies and concoctions purported to cleanse the liver. However, health professionals have issued warnings regarding the potential harm these practices may inflict on the vital organ.

Dr. Piyush Ranjan, Senior Consultant and Vice Chairman of the Department of Gastroenterology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, debunked the notion of liver detox diets, stating, “There is no scientific evidence that such therapy works, and it’s not understood what toxins are cleared.” He further cautioned against the hepatotoxic effects of certain herbs used in detox treatments, which can lead to liver injury.

Contrary to popular belief, the liver possesses innate detoxification mechanisms and does not require specialized cleanses to function optimally. Dr. Surakshith TK, Consultant in Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Sciences at Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, New Delhi, emphasized, “The liver is a self-sufficient organ capable of filtering toxins without the need for special cleanses.” He cautioned against the lack of regulation and substantial evidence supporting the effectiveness of products marketed for liver detoxification.

The proliferation of liver detox myths has raised concerns among medical professionals due to the potential risks associated with extreme detox methods. Dr. Vikas Jindal, Consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, highlighted the dangers posed by restrictive diets and unproven supplements, which may lead to nutrient deficiencies, dehydration, and liver damage.

Instead of resorting to unverified detox practices, experts advocate for maintaining a healthy lifestyle to support liver function. Dr. Ranjan emphasized the importance of abstaining from alcohol, adopting a balanced diet, and reducing intake of unsaturated fats and processed foods. Additionally, incorporating regular exercise and prioritizing adequate sleep and hydration are essential components of a liver-friendly lifestyle.
