In a groundbreaking development, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have unveiled ‘NeoStand,’ an innovative electric standing wheelchair designed to enhance accessibility and autonomy for individuals with disabilities.

The cutting-edge wheelchair, launched on Wednesday, offers wheelchair users the unprecedented ability to effortlessly transition from sitting to standing at the touch of a button, revolutionizing their daily experiences.

“With NeoStand, the user just needs to use a switch to move from sitting to standing. Even a caregiver or a therapist in a hospital can help the user practice standing in a gradual manner since NeoStand allows the user to stop at intermediate positions, which is important from a therapeutic standpoint,” explained Prof. Sujatha Srinivasan from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras.

The introduction of NeoStand marks a significant advancement in assistive technology, providing individuals with disabilities the freedom to engage in eye-level conversations, reach for objects, or simply enjoy everyday activities like standing by a counter.

Prof. Srinivasan, who also led the Institute’s TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development, emphasized the transformative impact of NeoStand, stating, “Wheelchairs enable us and it is a safe space for our personal mobility and to perform daily activities. The ability to stand with just a push of a button makes the wheelchair even more inclusive, helping quadriplegics to stand independently.”

NeoStand follows the success of previous initiatives by IIT Madras, including ‘Arise,’ India’s first manual standing wheelchair, and ‘NeoBolt,’ the country’s pioneering motorized add-on for wheelchairs. These innovations underscore the institute’s commitment to developing cutting-edge solutions to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

The launch of NeoStand heralds a new era of inclusivity and accessibility, empowering individuals with disabilities to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. As assistive technologies continue to evolve, initiatives like NeoStand highlight the potential for innovation to drive positive social change and create a more inclusive society.
