Lucknow District Jail is grappling with a concerning surge in HIV infections as 36 more prisoners have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of cases in the prison to 47. The alarming discovery came as part of health screenings conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Health Department in December 2023.

All 47 HIV-infected prisoners are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Lucknow, with the jail administration actively engaged in providing necessary medical care and support. Prior to this recent spike, 11 cases had already been reported, emphasizing the critical need for heightened awareness and preventive measures within the prison system.

In response to the rising HIV cases, the jail administration has initiated counselling sessions for the infected prisoners, recognizing the importance of mental health support alongside medical treatment. Authorities have also implemented dietary changes for the infected individuals, with an increase in their daily food intake to ensure they receive the nutritional support needed for their well-being.

“All the prisoners found positive have been kept under the observation of doctors and are receiving treatment at KGMU’s Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Centre,” stated a jail official. The Anti-Retroviral Therapy Centre at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) plays a crucial role in providing specialized care for HIV-infected individuals.

Jail Superintendent Ashish Tiwari underscored the importance of health screenings and proactive measures in managing the situation. “The health screening of prisoners was carried out on the orders of the state AIDS Control Society,” Tiwari explained, emphasizing the commitment to addressing and containing the spread of HIV within the prison environment.

As the authorities work diligently to manage the current cases and prevent further infections, there is a growing awareness of the need for ongoing health monitoring and education initiatives within correctional facilities. The situation in Lucknow District Jail highlights the importance of collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals, prison administrations, and governmental bodies to ensure the well-being and health security of incarcerated individuals.
