In a concerning update, Pakistan’s Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination revealed the detection of polioviruses in environmental samples from four different districts. These samples, obtained from Karachi, Hyderabad, Chaman, and Peshawar, were found to contain the poliovirus, as stated by the Ministry in a recent announcement.

Highlighting the vulnerability of children with weakened immune systems, the Ministry stressed the urgent need for vaccination, asserting that polio immunization remains the sole shield against the virus and its potential disabling effects.

Emphasizing the critical role of the country’s robust polio surveillance system, the Ministry underscored the importance of consistent vaccination efforts during every polio campaign, urging parents to ensure their children under five receive the necessary polio drops.

This alarming discovery adds to the ongoing challenge faced by Pakistan, identified as one of the two remaining polio-endemic countries globally, alongside Afghanistan. With six reported polio cases this year alone, as confirmed by the Health Ministry, the urgency of vaccination campaigns becomes increasingly pivotal in combating the spread of this infectious disease.
