In a heartwarming display of dedication and empathy, medical professionals at KIMS Cuddles Hospital in Hyderabad showcased an extraordinary commitment to effective communication by learning sign language to update and connect with a deaf-mute couple regarding their newborn’s progress.

Marri Bhagyamma, 47, and Marri Rajasekhar, 55, joyfully welcomed twins into the world through IVF, but complications arose, and one of the twin boys sadly didn’t survive. The surviving baby girl, born at an astonishingly low weight of 540 grams, was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at KIMS Cuddles.

Navigating the challenges of a precarious 80-day NICU stay, the medical team, consisting of seven doctors and nine support staff, recognized the barriers in communication with the deaf-mute parents. Initially, written communication and the aid of a sign language interpreter were utilized, but when this assistance became unavailable, the team embarked on an inspiring journey.

Driven by compassion and commitment, the doctors and nurses devoted ten days to learning sign language to directly communicate treatment updates and the baby’s progress to the parents.

Dr. Aparna Chandrasekharan, Clinical Director of Neonatology at KIMS Cuddles Hospital, highlighted the complexities involved in the case. “The baby girl faced various challenges, including respiratory issues and the tragic loss of her twin. Throughout her 80-day NICU stay, our team ensured comprehensive communication with the parents, conveying intricate treatment details using sign language.”

The baby girl’s journey encompassed extensive respiratory support and meticulous care, culminating in her discharge after 79 days, weighing a healthy 1,642 grams. Her discharge was accompanied by positive signs during neurological examinations, hearing, and vision assessments.

Expressing their heartfelt gratitude through sign language, Rajasekhar emphasized the hospital staff’s exceptional efforts. “The doctors and hospital staff diligently communicated every aspect of our baby’s treatment. They provided us with constant updates and comprehensive information, guiding us through the entire journey,” she expressed with heartfelt appreciation.
