The surge in visceral leishmaniasis cases, commonly known as black fever, has sparked concern in West Bengal. While the situation isn’t deemed alarming, health officials are on alert after 14 reported cases since October, including one fatality identified as Avdesh Paswan.
Records from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases note 375 cases nationwide in 2023, resulting in five deaths. Despite the relatively lower figures in West Bengal, the Health Department remains vigilant, particularly due to the state’s past history of severe outbreaks alongside Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
An alert regarding potential black fever impact was issued in October, prompting heightened surveillance in districts like Malda, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Kalimpong, and Darjeeling. Officials aim to proactively monitor and respond to any potential emergency situations related to this disease.
