COWI in India, a subsidiary of the globally renowned engineering and design consultancy COWI A/S, has pioneered a significant industry initiative by introducing augmented paternity leave benefits for its male employees in India. This transformative policy offers up to six weeks or 30 working days of enhanced paternity leave, applicable during childbirth or adoption—an unprecedented move in the industry.

The initiative, introduced in blocks and available over 12 months, aims to enable male parents to play a more active role during pre- and post-delivery periods, fostering a balanced approach to parenting responsibilities in India.

Rasmus Odum, Group COO and Chairperson of COWI India, emphasized the company’s core value of care, stating that such initiatives not only benefit their colleagues and families but also contribute to a harmonious work-life balance, ultimately enhancing customer value and business performance.

This enhanced paternity leave aligns with COWI’s commitment to nurturing an inclusive and supportive workplace environment, ensuring that fathers can actively assist their partners in transitioning smoothly back to their professional roles, fostering a sense of balance and support.

Moreover, COWI offers an additional option for young mothers returning from maternity leave—allowing them to work comfortably from home for an extended six-month period—a step aimed at further supporting the well-being of new parents.

Pierre de Rancourt, Managing Director of COWI India, highlighted the company’s trust-based approach to leave policies, showcasing their belief in promoting overall well-being by removing sick leave quotas. The augmented paternity benefit stands as a significant stride in bolstering the well-being of employees during and after pregnancy.

Acknowledging the multifaceted challenges faced by men during such transitional periods, de Rancourt expressed hopes that this policy would facilitate a healthier work-life balance and provide crucial support to families, mitigating potential burnout risks.

COWI, known for its focus on sustainable energy, infrastructure, buildings, climate adaptation, and water sectors, boasts a global workforce of over 8,000 individuals from 86 nationalities, reaffirming its commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive work culture.
