A recent study proposes that adopting a healthy lifestyle and diet, in combination with the anti-diabetic properties found in herbal formulations, can effectively manage blood sugar levels amidst the escalating cases of diabetes.
Conducted by researchers from the Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital in Patna, the study focused on a patient grappling with elevated blood sugar levels. The findings have been published in the International Ayurvedic Medical Journal (IAMJ).
Led by Assistant Professor Prabhas Chandra Pathak, the research team prescribed a regimen of evidence-based traditional medicines, including herbal formulations like BGR-34, Arogyavardhani Vati, Chandraprabhavati, along with cholesterol-reducing medications, lifestyle adjustments, and a specific diet for a period of two weeks. Following this initial phase, the treatment plan was slightly modified. Remarkably, the patient exhibited significant improvement; for instance, the blood sugar level, which stood at 254 mg/dl upon admission, dropped to 124 mg/dl.
The study highlights the anti-diabetic properties of Daruharidra, Giloe, Vijaysar, Gudmar, Methi, and Majishtha present in BGR-34. These components played a crucial role in lowering blood sugar levels. This particular medicine is developed by India’s research institute, CSIR, following extensive research.
Given the surge in diabetes cases attributed to sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy dietary habits, India now grapples with 72.9 million individuals afflicted by the condition, according to the latest data.
During the course of the study, the patient was also advised to engage in an hour of daily walking. Consequently, the patient’s fasting sugar level, initially at 254 mg/dl, decreased to 124 mg/dl. Similarly, the post-breakfast sugar level dropped from 413 to 154 mg/dl. These parameters collectively indicate a notable reduction in blood sugar levels.
Encouraged by the positive outcomes of this treatment approach, the researchers recommend a comprehensive, larger-scale study for further evaluation.
Moreover, an earlier study conducted by AIIMS Delhi found that BGR-34 is effective not only in reducing sugar levels but also in combating obesity.
Sanchit Sharma, Executive Director of Aimil Pharmaceuticals, emphasized the significance of this study for diabetic patients, who often rely on lifelong medication.
“These herbal preparations also contain elements that boost immunity and increase antioxidant levels,” he added.
