Mandya, Karnataka – A tragic incident at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) has sparked outrage and grief after a seven-year-old girl from Nellore village, Malavalli, died days after undergoing leg surgery. The girl, who had suffered a leg fracture after a tile fell on her foot while playing, succumbed to severe infection and multi-organ failure, according to hospital authorities. Her family, devastated by the loss, has accused the hospital of medical negligence, alleging that the wrong medicine was administered during her treatment.

Timeline of Events

The incident began on May 26 when the child injured her leg. Initially treated as an outpatient at a private hospital in Malavalli, her condition worsened, prompting her parents to bring her to MIMS on May 29. Doctors at MIMS confirmed the fracture via X-ray and performed surgery the same day. However, soon after the operation, the girl began vomiting and experienced loose motions. Her health rapidly deteriorated, and she died on the night of May 31.

Protests and Demands for Justice

The girl’s sudden death has led to protests by her family and villagers, who staged a dharna in front of MIMS Hospital, demanding accountability and strict action against the doctors involved. The family’s anguish was compounded by the fact that they had lost another daughter at the same hospital just six months earlier.

Official Response and Investigation

In response to the incident, the district administration has formed an expert committee to investigate the matter. The panel, headed by Dr. Pradeep from Mysore Medical College, includes specialists from various fields and is tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry and submitting a report within 15 days. Mandya Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi and MIMS Director Dr. Narasimha Swamy have assured the family and protesters of an impartial investigation, stating that any negligence found will be met with stringent action.

MLA Ganiga Ravikumar and Deputy Commissioner Dr. Kumar have also convened a review meeting at MIMS to collect detailed information on the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials emphasized the need to determine whether the death resulted from a health complication or medical negligence.

Hospital’s Statement

Dr. Narasimha Swamy, Director of MIMS, explained that the girl developed septicaemia—a severe infection—after surgery, which led to multi-organ failure despite intensive care. He reiterated that a thorough investigation is underway to establish the facts.

Next Steps

The girl’s body has been sent to KR Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities await the findings of the expert committee and post-mortem report before taking further action.
