New Delhi, [12.02.25] – In a significant step towards improving geriatric healthcare and addressing substance abuse, the Ministry of Ayush and the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment (DoSJE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in New Delhi today. This strategic collaboration aims to integrate Ayush-based interventions with social welfare initiatives to promote holistic healthcare solutions for senior citizens and individuals battling substance abuse.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Ayush, and Shri B.L. Verma, Union Minister of State, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Also in attendance were Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Sh. Amit Yadav, Secretary, DoSJE, and other senior officials from both ministries.
A Commitment to Holistic Health Solutions
Highlighting the importance of this collaboration, Shri Prataprao Jadhav stated, “Geriatric healthcare and substance abuse require focused interventions, especially with an ageing population and rising addiction concerns. By leveraging the holistic approach of Ayush systems alongside social welfare initiatives, we aim to empower our senior citizens and those affected by substance abuse.”
Shri B.L. Verma emphasized the government’s commitment to elderly welfare, stating, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, several steps have been taken to enhance the well-being of senior citizens. This MoU with the Ministry of Ayush will bring substantial benefits, including specialized training modules, treatment protocols, yoga training programs, and preventive healthcare practices tailored to the elderly.”
Integrating Ayush Practices for Health Promotion
Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, elaborated on ongoing geriatric healthcare initiatives, such as Geriatric Healthcare Camps under the National Ayush Mission. He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing senior citizens’ health through traditional medicine systems.
Sh. Amit Yadav, Secretary, DoSJE, underscored the importance of Ayush interventions in combating drug addiction. “By adopting Ayush-based treatment models, we aim to create a drug-free society while ensuring our elderly population leads a healthy and dignified life.”
Key Objectives of the MoU
The MoU lays out a framework for collaboration in the following areas:
- Cooperative Efforts: Establishing synergy between the Ministry of Ayush and DoSJE to foster innovative initiatives for promoting geriatric health and reducing drug dependency.
- Research Promotion: Encouraging studies on geriatric health, substance abuse, and mental well-being with a focus on the therapeutic benefits of traditional healthcare practices.
- Health Promotion Activities: Implementing additional programs tailored to the elderly and individuals affected by substance abuse.
