New Delhi — India has administered over 27.77 crore vaccine doses to pregnant women and children, with Bihar and Uttar Pradesh taking the lead, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel announced in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Friday. The milestone was achieved through the U-WIN digital platform, a tool designed to streamline vaccination services under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).
The U-WIN platform facilitates the digitalisation of immunisation records for pregnant women and children up to 16 years, ensuring the timely delivery of vaccines against 12 preventable diseases. These include measles, polio, tetanus, and diphtheria, among others.
“As of November 25, 7.43 crore beneficiaries have been registered, 1.26 crore vaccination sessions held, and 27.77 crore doses administered through U-WIN,” Patel stated. She added that the platform’s increasing usage has raised awareness and improved access to immunisation services among citizens and frontline workers.
Bihar and Uttar Pradesh Lead Vaccination Efforts
Bihar has administered over 6.7 crore doses, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 5.9 crore, and Madhya Pradesh with 2.2 crore. In contrast, Lakshadweep recorded the lowest count with 33,266 doses administered.
In terms of beneficiary registration, Uttar Pradesh topped the list with more than 1.6 crore individuals, closely followed by Bihar with over 1.5 crore registrations. Lakshadweep again recorded the lowest figure, with only 6,821 beneficiaries.
Nationwide Roll-Out and Key Features of U-WIN
The nationwide roll-out of U-WIN aims to target approximately 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.6 crore infants annually. The platform’s standout features include:
- Anytime, Anywhere Access: Vaccination services available regardless of location.
- Integration with Ayushman Bharat: Generating Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) for both mothers and children.
- Citizen-Friendly Modules: Automated SMS alerts, QR-based e-Vaccination Certificates, and offline data entry options for vaccinators.
The initial pilot phase of U-WIN covered 63 districts across 35 states and union territories, paving the way for the platform’s full-scale deployment.
Strengthening Immunisation in India
The Health Ministry’s efforts to digitalise and expand vaccination coverage underline India’s commitment to improving maternal and child health. With robust participation from states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the U-WIN platform is emerging as a pivotal tool in achieving equitable healthcare delivery nationwide.
