Approximately 150,000 individuals rallied together in support of young Kanav Jangra, an 18-month-old suffering from the rare genetic ailment known as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. Kanav required a single injection of Zolgensma to extend his life beyond the age of two, but the price tag for this medication was a staggering 17.5 crore rupees.
Amit Jangra, Kanav’s father and a tax official, initiated an online crowdfunding campaign that quickly gained widespread attention. The Delhi government and Bollywood celebrities joined in, appealing to the public for assistance. In a positive turn of events, the US pharmaceutical manufacturer agreed to sell the medicine for 10.5 crore rupees. The collective efforts of politicians, actors, philanthropic organizations, and countless ordinary individuals made it possible to reach the funding target.
Kanav was diagnosed with SMA Type 1 at just seven months old, a condition that leaves infants ventilator-dependent by the age of two, with few surviving beyond that point. The disease manifests in infancy, preventing those affected from sitting or walking independently, often leading to feeding difficulties and respiratory complications.
Amit Jangra appealed to everyone to support parents struggling to secure treatment for their children suffering from SMA.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal paid a visit to Kanav’s residence in Najafgarh, expressing concern for his health. After speaking with Kanav’s parents, Kejriwal emphasized the urgent need for the imported injection from the US. With the combined efforts of MPs Sanjeev Arora and Sanjay Singh, as well as public support, Kanav received the injection. Kejriwal thanked all those who contributed to Kanav’s cause and noted that the central government had reduced import duties on the injection, further aiding the situation. Kanav’s condition showed significant improvement, with his hands functioning more effectively and his legs steadily recovering. Kejriwal extended his wishes for Kanav to lead a longer, healthier, and happier life. He also mentioned that nine cases of this rare disease had been reported across India.
Several actors and television personalities, including Sonu Sood, Rajpal Yadav, Farah Khan, Vidya Balan, Shakti Kapoor, and Kapil Sharma, used their social media platforms to appeal for funds for Kanav’s treatment.
