Valanchery, Kerala – A concerning cluster of HIV cases has emerged in Valanchery, Malappuram district, with 10 individuals testing positive after sharing syringes for drug injection. The revelation came following a routine screening conducted by the Kerala AIDS Control Society in January 2025, which initially identified a single new HIV case in the area.

Subsequent investigations by the Health Department revealed that nine additional individuals, who had shared syringes with the initial case, had also contracted the virus. Health authorities confirmed that three of the ten infected individuals were migrant workers from other states.

Malappuram District Medical Officer (DMO) R Renuka expressed concern about a potential surge in HIV cases among drug users. “This group remains at serious risk of contracting and spreading the virus,” she stated.

Following the discovery of the first case, health officials launched a targeted surveillance program focusing on high-risk populations, including drug users and sex workers. This proactive approach led to the identification of the nine additional individuals, all linked to the initial case, who tested positive for HIV. Authorities strongly suspect that the infections stemmed from the use of a single contaminated syringe.

DMO Renuka emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that efforts are underway to identify other potential contacts within the affected group and to ensure immediate medical intervention. “Our priority is to provide immediate treatment and prevent further spread of the virus,” she added. The Health Department is also increasing awareness campaigns regarding the dangers of sharing needles and the importance of safe injection practices.
